Are online classes a boon or a bane?--a case of Tamenglong College

The past two years have been a tough time for students and teachers alike due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. Except for a few weeks of offline classes and semester exams, the College conducted most academic activities online. And I am terrified that many students might not be able to learn what they ought to during this period. For the teachers, taking classes and internal assessment tests through online mode is challenging due to poor internet connectivity and lack of human touch, which is very important.

However, one positive side of conducting classes online is that there has been significant improvement in attendance though it has never been satisfactory. It also appears to be a more convenient medium for students who have other responsibilities at home. One main reason for poor attendance is always poor internet connectivity. But there are also other factors. Some teachers even use Youtube to enable students to listen to the lectures anytime conveniently, even if they couldn't afford a smartphone or have network problems during online classes.

Recently, the concerned authority introduced Moodle, a Learning Platform or course management system, for all the teachers and students, which has been an added challenge for those who hail from remote areas.

Despite our sincere effort to reach out to all the students, it has been a tough time. Now, the Examination Standing Committee (UG) had, on 30 July 2021, decided to conduct an online examination for 50 marks for sixth-semester students tentatively from 30 August to 10 September 2021, and for 2nd and 4th semesters, results will be based on 'internal evaluation' and marks scored in the previous semester examination. Form fill-up for all the semesters will be from August 5-16 itself. But, with many students out of reach, it will be challenging for teachers to conduct Internal Assessment Tests, Home Assignments or exam related activities. Therefore, it will be wise for all the students to remain connected with the teachers/staff of the College. Students who are out of network coverage should also be informed about it.

Meanwhile, the College is considering various means to improve the institution's quality, including the revival of college uniforms. There is a high expectation that the number of students will increase partly due to the ongoing pandemic and the introduction of Science Streams from this academic session. Once the authority relaxes the current lockdown, the process for new admission will begin for both streams. An IGNOU Study Centre and an NCC Unit is also in the pipeline for the near future. All these humble efforts by the College will help the student community realise their cherished dreams in the days to come.
