Chavang Kut: an autumn post-harvest festival of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo community

Image
Ngamtinlun Touthang The annual autumn Kut festival of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo community is coming to an end for this year with grand celebrations in different parts of the world though the official State Level Kut in Manipur remained low profile, and the district levels cancelled altogether due to pandemic. Traditionally, there is no fixed date but Chavang Kut usually starts in October and continues till November. However, the official date falls on November 1 in Manipur and Assam. Kut is the most widely recognised festival of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo community living in the Bangladesh-India-Myanmar tri-junction. There are many types of Kut observed by this ethnic group. Chapchar Kut is widely celebrated in Mizoram; Mim Kut in Nagaland: Khuado Kut in Chin state of Myanmar (Burma) and Chavang Kut in Manipur and Assam. Pawl Kut, Thalfavang Kut , Chang Kut , etc. are others worth mentioning. Kuki dictionaries translate 'Chavang' as 'autumn', ‘ Kut’ as 'festival' or ‘feast’

Are online classes a boon or a bane?--a case of Tamenglong College

The past two years have been a tough time for students and teachers alike due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. Except for a few weeks of offline classes and semester exams, the College conducted most academic activities online. And I am terrified that many students might not be able to learn what they ought to during this period. For the teachers, taking classes and internal assessment tests through online mode is challenging due to poor internet connectivity and lack of human touch, which is very important. However, one positive side of conducting classes online is that there has been significant improvement in attendance though it has never been satisfactory. It also appears to be a more convenient medium for students who have other responsibilities at home. One main reason for poor attendance is always poor internet connectivity. But there are also other factors. Some teachers even use Youtube to enable students to listen to the lectures anytime conveniently, even if they couldn

What will be the Future of Our Children if the lone College in Tamenglong is close-down?

With Dr. Gaikhuanlung Ngaomei, Asst. Professor, Pettigrew College, Ukhrul. Tamenglong College, the lone degree-giving institute in the Tamenglong district, was established back in 1979. However, it started functioning as a full-fledged college only in 1985/86, got affiliation to Manipur University (M U) in 1992, and finally became a government college in 1995. Though it is situated in the remotest district of Manipur, it has been offering BA degree courses in different disciplines including  Economics, Education, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics , etc. along with some vocational courses. Recently MU gave the permission to start B.Sc. courses in  Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Environmental Science, Computer Science , etc. from the coming academic session 2021-22. Meanwhile, the college is in the process of setting up a new campus along with hostel facilities in a more suitable site thanks to the pro-active support of Pou Armstrong Pame
